Chapter 15

Anna

I knew it was strange, after I’d spent so much time fretting and worrying and freaking out about Blake—but I sat on my stool behind my booth at the credit union all morning feeling like a character in a movie.

I looked around when I first walked into work, like I was expecting disapproving glares from my coworkers. I wasn’t my usual friendly self, either. I felt like some tiny rodent, on the first day of spring, peeking its nose out of its den and sniffing the air to see if it’s safe to come out.

I don’t know what I was waiting for. There was no reason to expect that anyone had seen anything. As far as the town was concerned, the most interesting thing going on right now was that hockey game nobody wanted to talk about. (They seemed to enjoy yelling about it, though.)

The morning continued on as usual. Ruth and Marge walked in together, already bickering about who-knew-what. Steve tried to jump in and they pointedly ignored him. And then Dan arrived, and it was time to open.

No one suspected anything. I still couldn’t understand why I was so surprised by that. We were very careful, very quiet; I hadn’t even told Melissa anything. I hoped Blake knew better than to say anything to Tucker. I made a mental note to bring it up to him.

I went to sit in my booth and took care of the first few customers. Mrs. Marlene came to deposit her Social Security check, and Andreas from the old pump station wanted to take out a loan to buy a house. I passed Andreas on to Dan and sighed, looking at the door, for once anxious for customers to come in.

That was when it dawned on me in a whole new way: no one suspected anything. We were actually getting away with it.

When I realized this, my anxiety transformed into excitement. It was like I was French or something, keeping a secret paramour.

I mouthed the word silently, swirling it around in my mouth like fine wine. Paramour.

I liked the taste of that word quite a lot. I shifted in my chair as a feeling that was somehow both silly and sexual rose up from between my legs. I wanted to text Blake and tell him. We’re secret lovers, and I just realized how cool that is.

I didn’t text him. I got distracted when I heard Marge say the word ‘dating.’ I whirled around on my stool and looked at Marge, standing by the open vault door with one hand on her hip, her cat-eye glasses dangling from their gold chain. In her scarlet dress, she looked like Nancy Reagan.

Ruth’s mouth was puckered, and her blue gingham dress had distinct Kansas vibes.

I strained to hear what they were talking about.

“Lem from the chess club is not a ‘much younger man,’” Ruth was saying. I relaxed. They weren’t talking about who I was dating. Secretly. (So hot!) “He’s sixty-two! And you’re not ‘dating’ him. He came over one time because you wouldn’t stop going on about your stupid lemonade.
